Create a color specification, not a color name
Identify the color system and exact reference, chip edition and finish if relevant, target substrate, texture, gloss range or visual direction, viewing light, and approved sample. State which component is the master when bottle, lid, handle, gasket, straw, logo, and packaging need to coordinate. ‘Matte black’ or ‘sage green’ is not sufficient for production approval.
Decide where instrumental measurement is useful and where visual evaluation must lead. Curves, texture, sparkle, transparency, gradients, soft-touch surfaces, and small components can complicate readings. Define measurement locations, instrument geometry, illuminant, conditioning, and tolerance with qualified color personnel where accuracy is critical. Never use an uncalibrated phone photograph as the only acceptance evidence.
Compare finish families by use
Spray-applied paints can offer broad colors and effects; powder finishes can provide textured or matte surfaces and robust exterior options when properly applied; soft-touch systems prioritize tactile feel; metallic or vacuum-deposited looks create different visual and process needs; water-transfer and gradients add decorative complexity. Names vary, so request the actual layer structure and approved result.
Evaluate grip, fingerprints, scratch visibility, edge coverage, chemical exposure, ultraviolet conditions, dishwashing or hand-washing, and contact with bags or cup holders. A rough finish may improve grip but change fine logo reproduction. A very soft surface may feel premium but attract lint or show abrasion. Select the finish from the user scenario and brand priority.
Control preparation, application, and cure
Surface cleaning and preparation influence adhesion and appearance. Film thickness, atomization or deposition, grounding where applicable, flash time, oven or cure conditions, line speed, humidity, and handling can affect texture, gloss, color, and durability. The process must also protect vacuum structures, plastics, seals, threads, and areas that should remain uncoated.
Define masking boundaries around the rim, interior, threads, base, seams, and assembly interfaces. Check coating buildup where lids or accessories fit. Approve edge appearance and hanging or fixture marks. Record batch, pigment or material, process line, and cure verification so production differences can be traced when colors or adhesion vary.
Validate physical and chemical performance
Use project-appropriate tests for adhesion, cross-cut or tape behavior, abrasion, scratch, impact, cleaning, detergent, alcohol or chemical exposure, temperature, corrosion, and ultraviolet exposure. The method, conditioning, sample count, and acceptance must be written. Test the final decorated product because logos, topcoats, and packaging contact can change the system.
Claims such as BPA-free, PFAS-free, lead-free, food-safe, or dishwasher-safe require precise scope and evidence. A coating supplier statement may not cover every color, layer, product, application, or destination. Ask which material or finished sample was tested, by what method, on what date, and for which requirement. Use qualified regulatory advice for market obligations.
Approve batches and manage color drift
Create an approved physical standard and boundary samples where practical. Inspect under controlled light for color, gloss, texture, coverage, contamination, runs, orange peel, pinholes, scratches, dents, and masking. Compare early, middle, and late production and different racks or line positions. Define whether lid and body require a measured match or an intentional coordinated contrast.
For reorders, review pigment lot, coating material, supplier, line, substrate, texture, cure, and master sample condition. Physical standards age and can fade, scratch, or soil, so store and replace them responsibly. If continuity matters across seasons, consider producing coordinated components together or setting a formal color-management plan instead of promising perfect visual identity indefinitely.
