Translate the creative concept into production criteria
Provide final-scale artwork, color profile, dimensions, orientation, intended viewing direction, wrap seam, bleed, safe zones, and required alignment to handle, lid, or front datum. Identify critical faces, small text, barcodes, legal marks, gradients, skin tones, brand colors, and areas where distortion is unacceptable. A beautiful flat render is only the starting point for cylindrical mapping.
Decide whether the design needs photographic detail, spot-color accuracy, tactile raised ink, metallic appearance, repeat pattern, one-off personalization, or true all-over coverage. These goals can conflict. For example, a process optimized for a conforming abstract pattern may not maintain precise logo registration. Rank the desired outcomes and accept documented seam or transition limits.
Compare sublimation and heat-transfer routes
Sublimation typically relies on compatible dyes, heat, pressure, and a prepared light-colored coating. It can produce detailed wrap graphics, especially on suitable shapes, but base color, coating consistency, heating, paper alignment, and seam behavior influence the result. Dark substrates and exposed stainless steel may not reproduce the same palette without a different construction.
Heat-transfer labels or films can support colorful artwork across compatible coatings and shapes. Buyers should examine film edge, carrier removal, stretch, overlap, trapped air, adhesion, heat effects, and feel. Different suppliers may use the same broad term for different materials and equipment, so specify the approved system and test outcome rather than the marketing name.
Evaluate digital UV and tactile printing
Direct digital UV printing can place detailed color, white, clear, and sometimes layered texture on compatible surfaces. Product fixtures, printhead distance, curvature, ink cure, adhesion, and image mapping matter. Raised or ‘3D’ effects should be defined by measurable coverage and sample feel; the label does not establish height, flexibility, edge durability, or cleaning resistance.
Check banding, pinholes, color transitions, white underbase, gloss, edge lift, tactile consistency, and cure. Large wraps may require rotation and stitching. Confirm whether variable artwork is supported and how files are managed. Keep prints away from drinking edges or food-contact locations unless the exact use and material system have been properly assessed.
Use water transfer for conforming decorative patterns
Hydrographic or water-transfer decoration can conform a printed pattern around complex compatible shapes. It is often attractive for marble, wood, camouflage, or continuous motifs, but placement can vary and a precise logo may need another process. Base coat, film activation, dip angle, rinse, dry, and protective topcoat influence color and durability.
Define acceptable pattern stretch, seam or overlap, orientation, voids, folds, and repeat variation. Review topcoat gloss and feel. Test adhesion, abrasion, cleaning, chemicals, and environmental exposure appropriate to the use. A pattern that deliberately varies should still have a controlled defect standard so wrinkles and missing areas are not excused as uniqueness.
Approve color, durability, and pack-out
Color management should include source profile, approved digital proof where useful, physical sample, lighting, substrate, and tolerance for critical brand colors. Full-color reproduction on metal drinkware will not necessarily match a calibrated screen or paper print. Use instrumental readings for defined areas when suitable, but retain visual approval for gradients, photographs, and complex textures.
Run cleaning, adhesion, abrasion, chemical, and transport tests on finished product. Decorative surfaces can rub against lids, handles, dividers, or neighboring bottles during shipment, so test final packaging. Inspect artwork version, orientation, seam, color, registration, missing print, contamination, cure, and surface damage across the lot. Revalidate changes in coating, ink, film, topcoat, equipment, or geometry.
