Choose the laser result before the machine label
Define the desired visual: coating removal with metal contrast, subtle metal-on-metal marking, dark marking on a compatible exposed metal, line art, text, serial code, or rotary wrap. Terms such as fiber, CO2, UV, or MOPA describe tool families and capabilities, not a universal finished look. The supplier should recommend a validated route after reviewing the exact material, coating, artwork, and use.
Ask whether the laser removes a decorative layer, changes the surface, or uses a marking compound. Review edge quality, color, gloss, depth, tactile feel, heat tint, and possible corrosion implications. Never infer food-contact suitability from an exterior marking result. Keep decoration outside beverage-contact areas unless the complete process is specifically reviewed for that location and market.
Prepare artwork for the bottle geometry
Supply clean vector artwork with fonts converted to outlines and strokes expanded where required. Identify the minimum readable text, line thickness, knockout spaces, logo dimensions, orientation, distance from base and rim, and front reference relative to handle or lid. Fine details that look clear on screen can merge, break, or become visually uneven on a curved, textured surface.
For rotary or full-wrap work, provide an approved wrap file and discuss the seam, taper, handle obstruction, fixtures, and distortion. A cylindrical body is simpler than a tapered tumbler, faceted surface, or cup with a handle. Decide whether the artwork should visually align when the lid is installed, understanding that threaded lids can stop at varying rotational positions unless the design controls that interface.
Validate setup, focus, and production variation
Laser outcome depends on power, speed, frequency, pulse behavior, focus, passes, fixture, rotation, coating thickness, surface cleanliness, and material. Treat the approved parameter window as part of the production process. If the supplier changes coating batch, surface texture, bottle model, or laser system, compare new samples rather than assuming the old program transfers perfectly.
Check multiple units and positions, especially with large graphics or several colors. Confirm registration, straightness, consistent contrast, readable small elements, clean edges, no scorching or unwanted halo, and no damage to adjacent finish. Variable-data projects need additional controls for the source file, record count, duplicates, missing values, character support, data privacy, and code verification.
Test durability and scannable content
Agree an abrasion and cleaning protocol that reflects the product instructions. Laser-removed coating can be durable because no ink remains in the exposed area, but the surrounding coating and metal still require evaluation. Test corrosion or chemical exposure when relevant to the market and use. Do not promise dishwasher resistance without validating the exact body, finish, marking, cycle, detergent, and acceptance.
For QR codes, barcodes, or serial identifiers, define code type, data, size, quiet zone, contrast, curvature, scan distance, device range, verification grade if required, and fallback human-readable text. Test codes after final finishing and packaging. A code that scans on an artwork proof can fail when wrapped around a small diameter or marked with insufficient contrast.
Inspect engraving as measurable production
Create a visual standard using approved samples and controlled photographs, but also specify dimensions, position tolerance, orientation, content, and data match. Define critical defects such as wrong name or unreadable code, major defects such as severe misalignment or incomplete mark, and allowable cosmetic variation where justified. Inspect representative units across batches, fixtures, operators, or machines.
Protect personalized goods from mixing and surface abrasion during handling. Match names or codes to cartons only through a controlled data process. Reconcile input, produced, rejected, reworked, packed, and destroyed counts. For gifts shipped directly to individuals, separate decoration data from addresses where possible and delete files according to the agreed privacy process.
