Choose the resin from the intended use
Identify whether the product is intended for cold water, sports use, a shaker program, a retail beverage, a promotional giveaway, or another application. Common plastic families have different clarity, stiffness, impact behavior, heat response, decoration compatibility, and recycling pathways. Ask for the exact resin and grade, including colorants and recycled content where relevant, rather than accepting the word plastic as a specification.
Record fill temperature, washing method, beverage type, contact time, freezer or refrigerator use, outdoor exposure, and expected reuse. Claims such as BPA-free, food-contact suitable, dishwasher safe, or hot-water safe need to match the exact resin, components, conditions, and evidence. Confirm current market requirements with a qualified laboratory or adviser.
Lock capacity, geometry, and user experience
Define whether 500ml is nominal fill or brimful capacity, then obtain overall dimensions, opening diameter, base, weight, wall profile, and tolerances. For drinkware, review grip, one-hand operation, cup-holder or bag fit, visibility of volume markings, and filled weight. For packaging, review line handling, label panel, top load, and how the bottle behaves after filling.
Use a physical sample to evaluate taste or odor concerns, sharp edges, seams, squeeze behavior, transparency, color, and stability. A render or catalog image cannot show how the bottle flexes or whether it stands securely. If the bottle is meant for children, sports, or travel, define additional user and market requirements before selecting the model.
Treat the lid as a separate engineered system
Specify screw cap, flip lid, straw lid, push-pull spout, handle, valve, gasket, vent, and any protective cover. Record each component material, opening force, assembly method, and cleaning access. A straw or vented lid may resist splashes but still leak when inverted. Define the exact claim and test method instead of asking whether the bottle is simply leakproof.
Leak testing should identify fill volume, liquid, lid assembly, torque or closure force, orientation, duration, movement, temperature, and acceptable moisture. Review removable parts and replacement availability. Hidden channels, silicone seals, and valves need clear cleaning and drying instructions, especially for reusable programs.
Approve decoration and retail presentation
Plastic surfaces may be decorated with screen printing, transfer processes, labels, sleeves, molded color, or other methods depending on the resin and shape. Provide artwork, size, position, color reference, barcode, regulatory copy, and packaging dielines. Confirm whether inks, labels, and adhesives are appropriate for the intended contact and cleaning conditions.
Approve the decorated sample for color, adhesion, registration, readability, and scuff resistance. If units touch in the carton, add sleeves, bags, dividers, or another protection method. Retail packaging should state accurate use and care instructions without unsupported claims. Test barcode scanning and shelf presentation on the final pack, not a flat proof alone.
Compare wholesale offers on total program risk
Require the same bottle, resin, weight, lid, decoration, packaging, quantity, and Incoterm from each supplier. Ask for costs by component and note tooling, color MOQ, sample, test, inspection, spare-part, and freight assumptions. A lighter bottle or simpler cap may create a low quote that is not equivalent to the approved brief.
Build a timeline for sample approval, color matching, artwork, packaging, testing, production, inspection, and transport. Agree how material, pigment, mold, lid, gasket, decoration, or carton changes will be communicated. For repeat orders, retained samples and revision-controlled files make it possible to distinguish normal variation from an unauthorized change.
Handle recycled content and environmental claims carefully
If recycled content, recyclability, reuse, or reduced-plastic language is part of the program, define exactly what is being claimed, for which component, in which market, and on what evidence. A bottle, lid, gasket, label, ink, and adhesive may follow different collection or recycling pathways. Color and multilayer or decorative choices can also affect local acceptance. Avoid universal environmental claims based only on resin family.
Ask for relevant material declarations and chain-of-custody information when recycled content is specified, then control the approved percentage and source through purchasing. Confirm whether the chosen resin changes color, odor, mechanical, or testing expectations. Packaging copy should be reviewed against current destination guidance, and the buyer should provide practical disposal or reuse instructions rather than vague green terminology.
